From Baghdad to Beirut: Elia’s Story of Healing and Calling
Elia Chmeis grew up in a Muslim family in a small village in the Bekaa region of Lebanon. After Lebanon’s revolution brought economic collapse, he abandoned his dream of becoming a doctor and moved to Baghdad, Iraq, to study hotel management. When that door closed, a series of events brought him back to Beirut, where he found work at McDonald’s and something he never expected.
Through friendships with coworkers connected to GoChurch Beirut, Elia was invited to a Sunday service and then an Alpha course. In March 2023, during a service, he experienced intense nerve pain in his hand. Believers prayed for him, and the pain left completely. Two weeks later, during an Alpha Holy Spirit weekend, Elia shared his story publicly and gave his life to Jesus Christ.
Today, Elia is an ordained minister through Go Middle East and an emerging leader developing as a church planter. His journey from a young Muslim man searching for purpose across the Middle East to a trained, ordained Gospel worker is the fruit your partnership produces.
