Over the past year, Lebanon has been engulfed in a crisis that has affected every aspect of life. With escalating tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border, political instability, and an economic crisis gripping the nation, Lebanon is a country on edge. Many families, faced with continual threats and a deteriorating quality of life, have made the difficult choice to leave their homeland in search of safety and stability elsewhere. Entire towns and neighborhoods are emptying, painting a sobering picture of a distressed nation.
Nearly 25% of the population have been displaced because of the war. Sonic booms, the whine of arieal drones, and smoke plumes from bombings have become part of daily life. Remarkably, though disrupted, life continues despite the violence.
Julie & I chose to stay.
When the war began in October 2023, most of the Lebanese assumed that Julie and I would leave Lebanon until hostility ceased. We encouraged, even helped, others to leave—especially when the war escalated into Beirut. But for us, we chose to remain in Lebanon. We did not ignore the natural dangers, but after considering all the facts, chose to continue the ministry training and church ministry despite the war.
Our decision to stay has become a powerful way to “preach” a message without words. Our presence here is a testament to the enduring value of our faith, and it has provided a unique opportunity to communicate the love of Jesus in a way that transcends language. Because the assumption was that we would leave, our decision to stay made an impression. By staying, we hope to model the message of faith, and resilience. The application of this message goes beyond the present crisis. Our aim is that the spiritual leaders we are developing are purpose driven and resist pressures that may push them off track.
In Lebanon, staying when others are leaving speaks volumes. For many, The act of remaining is a powerful display of commitment and faith. By being here, we can stand alongside those who feel they cannot leave, offering a message of unwavering hope through our presence. One Lebanese businessman said, “I’m sure Lebanon will be OK because you are still here.” It is a commitment that allows us to demonstrate the love of Christ in ways that words alone could never express.
Some ask us why we are still here, and each time, I am reminded of Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:13-16, where He calls us to be salt and light in a world filled with darkness. For Julie and me, staying in Lebanon is more than just physical presence; it is about being a steady source of faith and love for our community. In a time when uncertainty feels like the only constant, we have the opportunity to show what it looks like to trust in something—and Someone—greater. Our decision to stay has become a powerful message of love and faith that resonates deeply in the hearts of those around us.
The crisis in Lebanon has left many people searching for community and support. For those who have stayed behind, finding a place of physical and spiritual refuge has become a pressing need. By remaining here, Julie and I can facilitate that sanctuary. Through our groups-centered church, Sunday gatherings, and personal relationships, we’ve provided a sense of connection and belonging to those who feel isolated.
Our Grow Groups are much more than Bible studies; they are places where people come to find hope and encouragement. In these intimate settings, individuals feel safe to share their struggles, pray for one another, and find comfort in a shared faith. The relationships we’re building here remind people that, even in an increasingly fragmented world, there is strength in togetherness. We are learning that community is often most powerful in times of crisis, and we are grateful to be part of a network of believers who lift one another up.
Faith Lived Out Through Action
Keeping in a crisis has also deepened our understanding of what it means to truly live out our faith. This season has provided us with opportunities to put Jesus’ teachings into practice in ways we could never have anticipated. The call to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31, NIV) has taken on a new and profound meaning as we walk alongside those struggling with fear, loss, and uncertainty.
Julie and I, along with our team, have been able to respond to our community’s needs in practical ways. Whether it’s distributing food, providing supplies, or simply offering a listening ear, these small acts of service allow us to bring God’s love into overwhelming situations. Each act, however small, serves as a reminder to those around us that they are not alone, that there are people here who care, and that God’s love remains steadfast even in the most challenging times.
Throughout this season, Julie and I have been humbled by the opportunity to tangibly reflect on the love of Christ. Our decision to stay is not about being better or stronger than others but simply about following the path we believe God has called us to. In staying, we have seen how our presence alone can become a powerful witness to our hope in Jesus. This hope is not bound by circumstances; it transcends even the most challenging seasons.
We hold fast to one truth: God is with us. And as long as He calls us to stay here, we will continue serving, loving, and supporting our community. Lebanon is a country that has known profound hardship. Still, it is also a place of incredible resilience, beauty, and strength. We focus on the promise from Isaiah: ” In a very short time, will not Lebanon be turned into a fertile field and the fertile field seem like a forest?” (Isaiah 29:17, NIV). It is our privilege to stand with our Lebanese brothers and sisters in Christ and to hold onto the promise of change.
